Mehbooba mufti : Geelani's final rites should have been performed according to family wishes

Mehbooba Mufti, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, stated Monday that the final rites performed by Syed Ali Shah Geelani's family should have been done.

Geelani (92) died Wednesday night.

Mufti spoke to reporters and stated that family members are allowed to perform the final rites according to their wishes. This was contrary to Geelani's case.

"I heard that his family members were beaten up after his death, and an FIR was lodged against them." She said that she believes this is against the country's culture.

"Everyone has the right to voice their opinions in a democracy. Mufti stated that even if you disagree with someone's views, this does not mean you will seek revenge for his ideology after his passing.

She stated that people had closed their shops involuntarily following his death, even though they were being threatened with losing their power and water supplies.

She said, "This was a natural response of the people because it was sad."
